SCBA constitutes Special Committee on Bhim Singh’s proposal for Pak-India prisoners

Supreme Court Bar Association (India) constituted a five-member committee to provide legal aid to the Indian prisoners in Pakistan as Prof.Bhim Singh, Sr. Executive Member has been providing free legal aid to hundreds of Pak-prisoners detained or are under trial in the Indian jails. Prof. Bhim Singh was recently invited in Pakistan by the Lawyers Congress headed by Shri Zulfiqar Ali Zehangir where he was honoured by the Supreme Court Bar Association (Pakistan) for his extraordinary contributions in the field of human rights and for providing free legal aid to the Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails. Prof.Bhim Singh’s proposal that the Supreme Court Bar Associations of India & Pakistan should work together to provide necessary legal aid to the prisoners in the respective countries.

The meeting of the Executive Committee of SCBA was presided by its President Shri Pravin H. Parekh, Sr. Advocate. Mrs. Aishwarya Bhati, Advocate, Hony. Secretary of the SCBA has been authorized to write a letter of thanks to the Secretary of Bar Association of Pakistan for extending felicitation and honouring Prof.Bhim Singh, Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Foreign Affairs in the Executive.

There are still about 250 prisoners in the Indian jails other than the fishermen either convicted or facing trials. The several PIL petitions are pending in the Supreme Court of India petitions seeking release of the Pak prisoners and repatriation. There are about 30 prisoners from Pakistan who are mentally challenged and five of them are deaf and dumb (goongas). They have been detained in the detention centre in Amritsar jail in spite of the direction of the Supreme Court to take out all those foreign prisoners who have completed their respective sentences or are not wanted in any case. Prof Bhim Singh had sent a team of advocates/Legal Aid Committee to verify if the orders of the Supreme Court were implemented. The main issue is, says Prof.Bhim Singh, that Pakistan has not identified their nationalities.

SCBA appreciated the efforts and contributions made by Prof. Bhim Singh towards taking initiative to build new bridges of understanding with the lawyers fraternity in Pakistan. They also congratulated him for being the first Indian Lawyers to be honoured with Shield by the Pakistan SCBA and acknowledging his contributions in the field of human rights.

Prof.Bhim Singh was felicitated by the Lahore High Court Bar Association and Islamabad Lawyers’ Association also. Prof.Bhim Singh had an opportunity to address Bar Association of Islamabad also. The District Bar Associations of Mirpur, Kotli and Muzaffrabad visited Prof.Bhim Singh in Islamabad and presented bouquets, books and gifts on behalf of the lawyers fraternity of POK.
